Bell Work

MODEL SENTENCE: It was this desire for the freedom of my people to live their lives with dignity and self-respect that animated my life, that transformed a frightened young man into a bold one, that drove a law-abiding attorney to become a criminal, that turned a family-loving husband into a man without a home, that forced a life-loving man to live like a monk.

There are two major rhetorical strategies working in this sentence, parallel structure and antithesis.
  1. Parallel structure is the repeated pattern of ideas in a sentence. Each idea is presented with exactly the same pattern: "that" verb this to opposite.
  2. Antithesis is the use of opposing ideas to provide contrast and emphasize a point. He went from "frightened" to "bold," from "law-abiding" to a "criminal," from "a family-loving husband" to homeless, from "live-loving" to the self-sacrificing life of a "monk."

I want you to write a sentence of your own that EXACTLY follows the pattern of the model sentence. Use PARALLEL STRUCTURE and ANTITHESIS.

Here is mine:
It is a passion to help others that brings growth and maturity, that turns an unfocused young woman into a driven one, that allows a lost soul to find direction, that transforms a self-serving boy into a man with purpose, that allows a restless spirit to find peace.

You write yours on a sticky note and put it on the board!
